In Not Native, Pia Tuulia Cäbble weaves a meditation on migration, ancestry, and belonging. The work’s surface is animated with vivid lines, red for forced displacement through slavery and conflict, green for chosen journeys in search of education or opportunity, blue for migrations of refuge and survival, gold for return and ancestral reconnection, and white for the invisible passages of memory and spirit. Through papier-mâché, mosaic, hair, and beadwork, Cäbble transforms the fabric of migration into sacred cartography - a map of humanity’s constant movement across the globe. The piece challenges notions of nativeness, suggesting that to be human is to migrate, and that our roots are found in the motion itself.
